Skills Training

Training in inventory accuracy can range from a mandatory cashier and counter training to quick huddles or a brief store meeting topic.

Cashier Training & Testing
Level: mandatory, cashiers
Frequency: twice per year

Failure to pass test should result in additional coaching and retesting. Persistent failure is a problem.

New Hire Orientation / Accuracy Refresh  -  Video Maintaining Inventory Accuracy
Level: mandatory, all
Frequency: at hire and annually during store meeting or individual training plan
Description: this 5-minute video shows many common accuracy mistakes.  Should be watched with a coach or at a store meeting to highlight inventory accuracy.

Counter training - Video How to Count
Level: mandatory, department heads and/or inventory counters
Frequency: twice per year and as needed as a coaching aid
Description: this 2-minute video highlights best practices to obtain a good initial count

Inventory coordinator can request laminated "Before you PIP" cards from us or print them from the PDF link shown in the video page.  Before granting security access to PIP, the counter should be able to demonstrate accurate counting to the inventory coordinator. Counters variances should be routinely double-checked by inventory coordinator.  Those exhibiting difficulty counting accurately should be coached and security revoked if accuracy does not improve.

Department head training - Video Flossing and Purge Back stock
Level: mandatory, department heads
Frequency: yearly or as needed
Description: department heads play a lead role in accuracy. Making sure SKUs are where they should be, back stock and base deck stock is clearly labeled is a cornerstone to accuracy.  There's no sense even attempting to count a sloppy department.

Inventory coordinator should walk aisles to determine if a department is suitable for counting. Departments in continuous state of disarray need a new department head!
